Parent coaching in social work

A family benefiting from parent coaching

Did you know that social workers can intervene with families to promote the well-being of parents and children, as well as the physical, psychological and emotional development of the latter? This is called parent coaching.

It is a service offered by Clinique GO™ social workers, who are called upon to intervene through the online social work consultation. We tell you about this service in the following.

Parenting coaching for family wellness

Family life can pose special challenges. Some parents may feel overwhelmed by their role or find themselves faced with the unknown when the family experiences particular challenges. They may feel that they do not have the skills to properly guide their child or to deal with conflicts that arise between family members. This is where the social worker can step in for parent coaching.

By analyzing the problems encountered by a family as well as the daily life of the parents and children, the professional can understand the roles that are filled by each member of the family and the dynamics within the family. He or she is then able to propose an appropriate intervention and set specific objectives, the goal of which is to foster good relationships and healthy family dynamics.

In what situations should I use parent coaching in social work?

A family can encounter a host of different problems and the social worker is able to intervene in many situations. Here are some examples:

  • For the healthy management of emotions, both on the children’s and the parents’ side;
  • To guide parents in the development of their children, both emotionally and intellectually;
  • To promote parents’ confidence in their parenting skills;
  • To improve communication within the family;
  • To improve communication within the family; In case of difficulties encountered by the child in the school environment (repeated failures, bullying, bad company, etc.);
  • To deal with addiction or substance abuse;
  • To prevent parental burn-out;
  • To help parents develop healthy ways of rewarding their children, or on the opposite, to know how to react in case of misbehavior;
  • To cope with a bereavement or the announcement of an illness in a family member;
  • Dealing with disagreements between parents about education and discipline;
  • Etc.

Social worker’s expertise to support families

The social worker is the professional to consult when a complex social situation arises. It is therefore natural for a family to call upon their services for parenting coaching. The social worker’s outside perspective can help parents take a step back and analyze the situation. The social worker then proposes concrete strategies to restore family harmony and promote everyone’s well-being.
