Interpersonal skills are important and, despite this, they are not something you learn in school. It seems to be easier for some people to have an open and warm attitude, which makes it easier to deal with others and to relate to others. However, it is important to know that interpersonal skills are something that can be developed! We have prepared this article, in which our social workers offer you some tips.
Soft skills are important in all areas of our lives
If we talk about the professional environment, it is always important to have technical skills inherent to our field of activity. However, these are not enough to bring us success. Indeed, we must also have “soft skills”, i.e. human qualities. While in the past, recruitment and hiring processes focused on know-how, education and experience, more subtle skills are now increasingly sought after in candidates.
Human relations are indeed the basis of many areas of our lives. Although they are very important in the professional field, particularly to stand out and obtain promotions, they are just as important in our friendly and loving relationships, in short in interpersonal relations.
How can I develop my interpersonal skills?
We understand the importance of interpersonal skills on a daily basis, and it is important to know that it is possible to develop them. Our social workers present below some tips to put into practice in your daily interactions.
- Communicate clearly
Stick to the essentials, use clear words, avoid expressions that could be misinterpreted… These are important communication tips. It is important to know how to communicate clearly, otherwise there is a risk of being misunderstood by the other person, which would not be a good basis for a relationship. It is essential to communicate well both orally and in writing.
- Make others speak and listen to them
Generally speaking, whether it is a colleague, a superior or a new acquaintance, others like to talk about themselves and their knowledge. By actively listening and asking questions, we get the other person’s attention and develop their interest in us. The other person will always be happy to feel listened to and understood.
- Sharing
To build relationships with others, sharing is essential. We must know how to open up, share our emotions and ideas with honesty. This is the basis for building healthy relationships.
- Showing appreciation for others
Sometimes, the simple fact of thanking someone or complimenting them for their work or for something they have done can take us a long way. It shows our appreciation and the value we place on the other person. By paying attention to others, they feel appreciated and it is then more natural for them to do the same with us.
- Learn to manage negative emotions and be optimistic
It is quite natural to have bad days, to feel sad or angry. However, it is important to know how to channel these negative emotions and put them aside when it comes time to make contact with someone who is not involved in the situation. It helps to avoid reacting impulsively or appearing aggressive or just plain mean… We never win by letting these emotions guide our words and actions.
When we encounter a problematic situation, for example at work, it is always better to approach it with an optimistic attitude. We then put ourselves in “solution mode” and project the image of a proactive person.
- Simply have confidence
Once you’ve put the above tips into practice, you need to be able to apply them with confidence. It may be cliché to say, but in order to attract the confidence of others, you must have confidence in yourself. Above all, you must be aware that you are worthy of this trust and respect at all times!
