What is Kinesiology?
The number of studies demonstrating the benefits of physical activity on overall health in the 90’s lead to the development of sports related disciplines.
Kinesiology comes from the ancient Greek word kinesis which means movement and logie meaning science. Kinesiology is the science of movement. A kinesiologist is a health care professional specialized in physical exercise. This discipline’s main interest is the body’s biomechanics, the components allowing movement such as bones, muscles and joints.
A kinesiologist studies movement in order to improve performance, reduce injury or to avoid physical decline due to a sedentary lifestyle. Their aim is to improve your physical conditioning, your motor skills, as well as studying different factors enabling you to perform certain kinds of sports, especially in case of an injury or illness.
How can a kinesiologist help me?
A kinesiologist is able to assess your physical capabilities, as well as your ability to perform different physical activities. In order to complete your full assessment, they will evaluate your overall health, your cardiovascular capacity, your muscular endurance, your aerobic performance, your flexibility, as well as your balance.
A kinesiologist is trained to measure your body weight and your body fat percentage using the body mass index and measuring skin folds.
After gathering all this information, a kinesiologist is able to determine your strengths, weaknesses and recommend the best exercises for you. They are able to put together for you, a personalized training program that will improve your overall health.
