Eating healthy is the key to maintaining a healthy weight. However, it can be hard to make sense of the overwhelming amount of information about healthy eating habits, including what to eat and what to avoid. That’s why a professional with training in nutrition can be vital to your success.

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of obese people in the world has nearly tripled since 1975. In Canada, 26.7% of the population is now obese. This increase is due to many factors, two major causes being the rise of a sedentary lifestyle and the increase in consumption of processed foods.

Obesity has become a significant health issue, to the point where health care authorities now consider it a chronic disease, in the same manner as diabetes or heart disease. Globally, 2.8 million people die from causes directly attributable to obesity every year.

What is obesity?

The most commonly used tool to assess if a person is overweight is the body mass index (BMI). It takes into account a person’s height and weight and provides weight ranges that correspond to underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese. According to the formula used to calculate the BMI, the further you are from what is considered to be a healthy weight, the greater the risks of developing a disease. (You can learn more and calculate your BMI here)

However, it’s important to not solely focus on this single number because it can be compromised by several factors, such as muscle mass. Nutritionists use tools that can precisely determine an individual’s percentage of body fat. They’ll also be able to take into account a multitude of factors and measures to assess a person’s condition.

In-home consultation with a nutritionist

Nutritionists who are members of the Clinique GOTM team can help you reach or maintain your healthy weight with tips and advice specifically tailored to your condition.

A meeting with one of our nutritionists always starts with a complete evaluation of your medical history and an assessment of your eating habits. In the case of an excess weight problem, the professional will try to identify the factors responsible. The nutritionist will ask questions about:

  • Your eating habits;
  • How often you eat certain foods ;
  • The way you cook your food ;
  • How often you go to restaurants (frequency, what type of food, etc.);
  • The sociopsychological context related to eating certain foods (anxiety, loneliness, etc.);
  • How much energy you spend every day.

The answers to these questions will allow the nutritionist to design an intervention plan specifically adapted to you.

The advantages of calling upon a nutritionist

In Quebec, nutritionists are the only professionals recognized to be specialists of human nutrition and food. Those who are part of the Clinique GOTM team are also members in good standing of the Ordre professionnel des diététistes du Québec.

Nutritionists have received extensive training and have access to specific tools to understand their clients’ situation. There is so much information available about nutrition and they can separate myth from reality. They’ll be able to provide you with recommendations that will help you meet your objectives, while always making sure you are getting the nutrition you need to stay healthy.

Our nutritionists are your number one allies as you work toward your goal of eating healthy and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits!
